So much to say about Iceland, so much in fact that I need to split this into a four part post.
I will start by saying, if you have kids, Iceland is the place to go. You can rent a car and drive everywhere. Babies can sleep in the car while parents get to the next incredible destination. And every restaurant has kids corner with toys, books, art work. Its a dream. We stayed at hotels with restaurants and used our cell phones as monitors so we could eat dinner after putting our little man to bed. It's also probably the safest I have ever been to. So, if you are looking for an exciting place to go with kiddos, Iceland is it!
When we landed, our first stop was the Blue Lagoon. Its best to visit the Blue Lagoon on your way to or from the airport because its on the way to Reykjavik. And it really is a must see even if you only have time to drive by, stop for a picture, and go on your way. The water really is as blue as it looks. And the lava fields you drive through are rolling with bright green moss that is unlike any landscape I have ever seen. These lava fields are what astronauts practice on before journeying to the moon which makes them even cooler.
After an exhilarating start to our vacation, we arrived in Reykjavik. Determined to stay awake all day and battle the jet-lag, we had a full day of exploration. It was my husbands 30th birthday so we ate cake and drank beer for breakfast, we walked the harbor, we ate whale (okay not me but Townsend did), and we stood in awe of the Harpa Concert Hall.
Reykjavik is full of architectural wonders and Hallgrimskirkja was next. We walked up the rainbow street, stopping in shops along the way and just taking in the beautiful city. Little man was unimpressed by the glory of Hallgrimskirkja, he snoozed the whole time.
Our last night in Reykjavik we went wild and walked to the restaurant next door to the hotel for dinner. The Fish Market also happens to be one of the best restaurants in Reykjavik. Their menu is filled with, you guessed it, fish! But they have plenty of other options too including whale, puffin, and lamb which my husband said was the best he had ever had. Reykjavik is a charming, friendly, walkable city that I hope I will be able to visit again very soon.
